The Thorens TD 1600 turntable combines the brand's tradition of the past with the technology of the 21st century. Although it looks like the old and famous 160 series on the outside, with its classic wooden plinth, two-piece platter with thick rubber matting and acrylic dust cover, it incorporates many innovations on the inside.

Stabilised subframe with new suspension
The innovations include improvements to the suspension. The conical springs for the subframe are no longer mounted on the top board but directly on the bottom, which allows a more stable vertical movement. In addition, a small, strong steel wire connects the subframe to a steel pin on the bottom, preventing the subframe from wobbling.

Thorens TP 92 tone arm: unrivalled stability
The Thorens TD 1600 is equipped with a 9" (232.8 mm) Thorens TP 92 tone arm. The horizontal bearing of the TP 92 arm is a high precision ball bearing located under the tone arm tube at the same level as the diamond for better stability. The counterweight, decoupled by two rubber rings, is also at the same level. The Thorens TP 92 tone arm tube is made of high quality cold forged aluminium. During the design of the arm, a laser vibrometer was used to analyse the resonances of the tube, allowing Thorens engineers to target specific frequencies and thus ensure almost no unwanted vibrations.

The Thorens TD 1600 arm is ½" compatible, meaning it can accommodate any phono cell that is compatible with this mounting standard. The arm height (VTA) can be easily adjusted by loosening the tone arm locknut and then raising or lowering the tone arm. Anti-skating is provided by two ferrite magnets and can be adjusted with a set screw.
